Difference between Couple,Torque and moment of force. What is Couple? what is Torque?....Explained.

There is very small difference between Couple and Torque or moment of force. It is very easy to understand. Before study about Couple we must learn about Torque or Moment of force.

Basically Torque is an angular force.Couple is two forces acting parallel, opposite direction with same magnitude. In clear language, couple means two, two torque act in a object in opposite direction. Moment of force is effect to move the body.

Definition:

  • Torque: Torque is a rotational force that tends to cause rotation around an axis. Mathematically, Torque is product of force and Radius. Torque=F*R*sinθ.

Examples of Torque: open the door, wheels in vehicles

  • Couple:Two forces F and -F having the same magnitude, parallel lines of action and opposite sense are said to form a couple. Mathematically, product of distance and magnitude of parallel forces. Couple=D*F*sin𝛉

Example: steering of vehicle, pedal of cycle.

Difference between moment and couple:

The couple is a pure turning effect which may be moved anywhere in its own plane or into a parallel plane without any change of its effect on the body, but the moment of a force must include a description of the reference axis about which the moment is taken.
